5 Digital Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring is here and with it, the urge to purge and start fresh. You spend time tidying up your home, but what about your digital spaces? It’s time for some digital spring cleaning. A cluttered phone, overloaded inbox, or messy browser can zap your energy just as much as a chaotic closet.

Here are five areas of your digital life that could use a little digital spring cleaning—so you can scroll, and swipe with less stress and more ease. (Psst…don’t worry about taking notes, I’ve compiled all these digital spring cleaning tips and more in a handy digital declutter checklist for you. 😊)

1. Your Phone

Be real: you check your phone more times a day than you’d like to admit. Is it making your life easier or adding to the overwhelm? If notifications, endless apps, and digital clutter are stressing you out, it’s time to tidy up.

These digital spring cleaning tasks can make your  phone a more peaceful place:

✅Look over your notification settings and turn off ones you don’t need
✅Review apps you pay for
✅Delete apps or consolidate them into folders
✅Delete text messages like verification codes or old appointment reminders
✅Delete old notes
✅Spend five minutes a day decluttering your camera roll

Your phone should be a tool, not a source of stress. A little digital decluttering can make a big difference in how you feel every time you pick it up.

2. Social Media

Is your relationship with social media more love or more hate? If you’ve been feeling more drained than inspired, a quick digital spring cleaning can reset your relationship with social media.

Here’s how to clean it up:
✅Unfollow accounts that no longer serve/interest you
✅Update your passwords
✅Declutter saved posts
✅Update your profile/bio/photo

Give yourself permission to curate a social media space that makes you feel good.

3. Internet Browser

Your internet browser is like the junk drawer of your digital life—full of things you saved for “later” but never actually got around to using. A few simple tweaks can make your browsing experience smoother and more efficient.

Here’s what to tidy up:
✅Declutter your bookmarks
✅Review and declutter browser extensions
✅Review your browser start up settings (e.g. do you want a certain set of tabs to automatically open?)
✅Do you use tab groups? Audit them (or start using them).

A bit of browser spring cleaning means  less digital chaos and fewer distractions.

4. Your Inbox

Of course, we need to talk about your inbox. An overflowing email account can feel like a never-ending to-do list, but with a little effort, you can make it manageable (and maybe even enjoyable?).

Try these digital spring cleaning strategies for your inbox:
✅Unsubscribe from newsletters if you haven’t opened the last 4 messages from the sender
✅Audit your folders/labels – are you using them?
✅Delete or file emails that are 12+ months old
How many email addresses do you have? Does each have a purpose?

Now is also a great time to tweak your inbox settings. Do you like using a reading pane? Is the overall layout working for you, or could it be less cluttered? Small changes can make a big difference in how you interact with your email daily.

5. Online Tools

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the number of online tools we regularly use. Between project management apps, communication platforms, and specialized tools, the list quickly grows. But here’s the thing—if you’re not keeping track of what you’re paying for and how often, it could be costing you more than you realize.

If you don’t have a list of the tools you use (and pay for!). Now is a great time to create one.

Here’s what to include:
👉The name of the tool
👉URL
👉Log in info
👉Amount you pay for it and how often (e.g. $99/year)
👉Renewal date if it’s a paid tool
👉Payment method (e.g. PayPal, credit card, debit card)
👉Purpose

Bonus tip: Set a calendar event to remind you about upcoming renewals. This gives you the chance to assess whether the tool is still meeting your needs, or if it’s time to downgrade, upgrade, or cancel your subscription. Having this reminder means you won’t get caught off guard when a payment is due!

Digital spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying up your devices—it’s about creating a smoother, more intentional experience that helps you feel in control and focused. Whether it’s decluttering your phone, organizing your inbox, or taking a closer look at your online tools, each step you take helps reduce stress and increases your digital efficiency.

As you tackle these areas, remember that the goal is simplicity and ease. Grab your metaphorical broom, and start sweeping through your digital space with this handy digital declutter checklist!
